Vanilla Crescents Cookies: A taste of Christmas tradition

A Taste of Christmas Tradition

One of the most beloved Christmas traditions in the Czech Republic are these delicate vanilla crescents cookies, and our family is no exception. Since we were little, these buttery vanilla cookies have been the highlight of the season. The hardest part has always been resisting them before Christmas Eve.

Our mother always knew just the right hiding spots to keep them safe until the big day, and that wait only made them taste even better. These cookies are tender, melt-in-your-mouth, and filled with the comforting aroma of vanilla and roasted almonds. They’re the kind of treat that brings warmth and a little magic to the holiday table.

INGREDIENTS

  • 225g butter
  • 250g flour
  • 150g almonds
  • 4g salt
  • 4g vanilla
  • ½ lemon zest (optional)
  • For spraying: Rum
  • For dusting: Icing sugar

  • Mix all ingredients together until you form a smooth, even dough.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up.
  • Set to 170°C (340°F).
  • Divide the dough into equal pieces.
  • Roll each into small crescents and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 8–12 minutes, depending on size, until lightly golden.
  • While still warm, spray each cookie with rum and dust generously with icing sugar.
  • Let them rest in a cool, dry place for at least one day, ideally up to three before eating. The longer they rest, the better they taste.
